Revisit use of Fotki as photo service?
« on: October 24, 2020, 11:49:03 am »
Do we want to do an environmental scan to see what other photo services may be available, and consider switching off of Fotki?

If we want to take this on, I would expect it to be a lower priority item, not requiring an answer until later in the executive term.  Perhaps recommendations by June and a decision by September.

Our current Fotki account expires on January 19th, and I've suggested to Leonard that we renew it for just one year, which will buy us the time we need to make an informed decision in this space.

Is there someone who would care to take on this task?

I have used Fotki for ALL my COC events since day one and never had any issues but I'm completely open to exploring other options.  Agreed there is no urgency in making a change and Fotki should be renewed for 2021.

I can look into renewing it.  Any idea how previous renewal was handled?

Oh the renewal is simple.  I've asked Leonard to log in to the Fotki account and take care of it.

It'll be the process of researching other options and making a recommendation of whether to switch or not that'll be the work.  I think a consideration would be the history of photos we have in the current account.

It's also possible that we could tweak the process for posting photos.  Fotki provides an extremely large amount of storage now, which it didn't "back in the day".  One of the most cumbersome steps in our process is the requirement to reduce the size of photos submitted.  That is outdated and could likely be scrapped (I think someone brought that up at the AGM as one of the things they don't like about Fotki, but that isn't Fotki's fault... that's just old process).  There might be other ways we can simplify the process as well.

OK great.  Thanks to Leonard for that.

As I'm sure you know my main concern is simply preserving all those years of albums.  And you're right I think there is a ton more room available to us now on Fotki compared to the old days :)

My biggest resistance to getting rid of Fotki is that we would lose all of our photo/album history.  I have no problem with exploring more modern providers for moving forward as long as we're ALSO going to keep Fotki for access to all the old albums, but I wouldn't want to outright cancel our Fotki account.

Since Duane is happy with Fotki, I don't think it's appropriate for us to tell him he has to research other options. Is someone else willing/able to do the legwork to research other providers and make a recommendation?  You could do the research and make some recommendations, and, with Duane's blessing, we could switch to a new provider for new albums going forward.

Hey gang,

so I just completed a quick test of creating a new album on Fotki to ensure the process still matches what is written in the coordinator manual and I have to say it went very smoothly with no issues.  Dragging and dropping the photos was quick and easy, our entire history is currently stored there and the cost is minimal (under $2 a month), so I'm struggling to see a reason for switching providers.   Coordinators have the ability to post their photos anywhere they choose with a link to the web site so staying with Fotki shouldn't cause a problem for anyone.

That being said I am always open to further debate.  That is what these forums are for after all :)

I just want to clarify that the instructions on the web site have been simplified a lot because we no longer have to worry about storage limits on Fotki.  I do think it's a lot less cumbersome than it used to be.

Where is that guide?
There was a quirk to properly make the album that I kept forgetting everytime I posted pictures. Forgot what the quirk was, it's been so long. Gord Parker was the one that told me how to make it work as it should.

It's here, in the "Coordinator Manual" in "Completing Your Event":

calgaryoutdoorclub.com

I think I'll remove the link to the "User Guide" for "attach album" and just write the instructions in our guide.  That, too, has been simplified.  All you have to do is copy the URL of the album into your "Photo Album" page on the event.
